Sal Nistico only led three sessions for American labels during his career (along with five for European companies), which is surprising, considering how exciting a bop-oriented soloist he was. For this Bee Hive LP (which has not yet been reissued on CD),
Nistico heads a sextet filled with notables (trumpeter
Ted Curson, baritonist
Nick Brignola, pianist
Ronnie Mathews, bassist
Sam Jones and drummer
Roy Haynes). They jam through a pair of
Nistico's originals,
Wayne Shorter's "Fee-Fi-Fo-Fum," and three standards including an oddly voiced but roaring "Anthropology." The soloists are all in fine form during the obscure but worthy session.
