After Love Battery
's steady improvement between 1991's Between the Eyes
and the following year's excellent project Dayglo
, one would figure that 1993's Far Gone
would also improve. Unfortunately, Far Gone
loses some of the interesting complexities buried in the mix of Dayglo
and instead concerns itself with a more blocky, bigger rock sound that isn't nearly as creative. Though Kevin Whitworth
's psychedelic lead-guitar punctuations are still steady on "Half Past You" and "Float," most of the songwriting on this album is sloppy, and the mix of instruments isn't as clearly defined. A disappointment.
