The 2012 anthology The Complete Remastered Recordings on Black Saint & Soul Note combines all of alto saxophonist Lee Konitz's recordings for the independent jazz labels. Included are 1979's Live at Laren, 1986's Ideal Scene, 1987's The New York Album, 1990's Zounds, and 1992's Lunasea. One of the original '50s cool jazzers, Konitz developed over time into a cerebral, adventurous, and always swinging journeyman artist who never shied away from challenging himself or taking musical risks. These recordings, beginning with the 1979 revival of his nonet featuring trumpeter Red Rodney, showcase Konitz's ever-searching small group approach to jazz improvisation that touches upon distinctively reworked straight-ahead standards, modal post-bop originals, and atmospheric, creative modern improvisation.
