Album Review

Recorded in Germany and originally released there on the Line label, this captures Ryder in ragged voice but infused with a spirit and energy that hovers over this album in a bone-chilling manner. Soulful and funky, Ryder offers up a stack of originals that hold up next to strong tracks like John Hiatt's "Where Is the Next One Coming From?" and Michael Duke's "I'm Not Sad Tonight." Ryder songs like "Like a Worm," "Rock'n'Roll Skin," "End of the Line," and "Youngblood" all shine with an originality that once again makes his later work shine in equal -- but entirely different -- worth to his early hits.
