It's a given fact that the Make-Up are more of a live band than a studio band -- at least for those who have seen them. After all, the all-around danceable fun and crowd participation is hard to capture in one's bedroom as opposed seeing them live and in person. So for the most part, all Make-Up records fail to live up to their stage presence; that is, with the exception of their side to this split EP. "Pow! To the People" is a singalong track of funk and soul that sounds as if Prince got together with the John Spencer Blues Explosion. Meanwhile, Scotland's Lung-Leg follow up the cutest release of 1997 -- a self-titled EP on Kill Rock Stars -- with an equally bouncy track of edgy indie-pop: multilayered vocals and complex, intertwined guitar work that detects traces of Sleater-Kinney. Unfortunately, this will probably be overlooked due to the Make-Up's side and the fact that this EP is aimed at collectors who own record players.
