Album Review

The Monsters EP collects five remixes of the title track, one of the standouts from the Gathering's seventh album, 2003's Souvenirs. In keeping with the Dutch group's recent forays into electronic realms, metal fans of old will likely want to avoid this release entirely, but for those in possession of more open minds, these remixes easily live up to the Gathering's experimental nature, thanks to their dramatically varied interpretations. Among them, the "Gallion Mix," with its distinctive electro-symphonic treatment, attains perhaps the most startling results, but the remaining versions aren't far behind. And on the multimedia front, the inclusion of two video performances and an interview (silly though it may be) with lead siren Anneke van Giersbergen offer further incentive for die-hard fans.
