Ivan Vaughan was responsible for introducing
Paul McCartney to
John Lennon at the July 6, 1957 performance of
the Quarry Men at St. Peter's Church in Woolton.
Vaughan was a childhood friend of
John Lennon's, but attended a different high school, Liverpool Institute, than
Lennon (who went to the Quarry Bank High School for Boys).
Vaughan sometimes played tea chest bass for
the Quarry Men in 1957, although it was just for fun and he soon drifted out of the onstage group. He had become friends with
Paul McCartney at Liverpool Institute, and his introduction of
Lennon to
McCartney was the first step in the formation of the greatest partnership in rock history.
